El Cotillo in Fuerteventura, a town to disconnect and relax
In Fuerteventura, in the municipality of La Oliva, is a charming fishing village called El Cotillo. Getting to El Cotillo is easy
El Cotillo is located in the northern Fuerteventura. If you go by car from any point on the island, the journey to El Cotillo is easy and beautiful. From Corralejo, you can follow the coastal route where you will see splendid landscapes of beautiful beaches and coves, to enjoy the sun and the sea and take some incredible photos. Another way to get around is through the regular bus lines that take you to El Cotillo, both from Corralejo (line 8) and from Puerto del Rosario (line 7).
If you are in Lanzarote, you can also go to El Cotillo in Fuerteventura. Every day ferries depart from the port of Playa Blanca in Lanzarote to the port of Corralejo in Fuerteventura in approximately 30 minutes. They have several departures a day; you can go in the morning and come back in the afternoon if you prefer so.
El Cotillo, a calm area in Fuerteventura
If you want to enjoy a few days away from the overcrowded areas, El Cotillo is the must-go town. Although during the summer there is more tourism, it never gets crowded like other tourist areas. Still, it is a very calm area the whole year.
It is a fishing village with very interesting places to see. Its seafaring tradition is referenced in Faro del Tostón, in Castillo de El Tostón or in La Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje, emblems of its culture and history.
Its fishing port is a recommendable area to visit as it has several restaurants specializing in fresh fish, where you can enjoy the taste of traditional Canarian cuisine.
Both in the north and the south of the village, the beaches of El Cotillo are quiet and very beautiful – they are among the best beaches in Fuerteventura.
And if we bear in mind that in the hottest months (from July to October) the average temperature is 24 degrees, and it is 17 degrees the rest of the year, there is no doubt visiting El Cotillo in Fuerteventura will be a success anytime.
Beaches in the northern El Cotillo
To the north of El Cotillo, on the way to Faro del Tostón, there are a series of coves that form small lakes between the white sand and the volcanic rock.
Los Lagos, as they are known, are surrounded by natural reefs that protect them from the waves. These coves with crystalline waters and white sand are ideal for going with children, are easily accessible and without parking difficulties.
A highly recommended activity to do in this area is snorkelling; both adults and children can enjoy exploring the seabed.
Attached to Los Lagos beach is Playa de la Concha. This beach is a cove that has no waves due to the natural reef that surrounds it. It is formed with fine white sand and crystalline water. It allows to appreciate the small marine fauna that lives in it at first sight. Near the coast there are restaurants where you can taste the local cuisine.
Following the road to the north, you can find another of the preferred beaches of El Cotillo, the beach of Los Charcos. Likes the previous ones, it is also protected by a natural barrier of volcanic rocks that form large puddles which act as natural pools of crystal-clear waters. With El Faro in sight, this beach is a pleasure for the senses.
While you’re there, you can go visit Faro del Tostón, which is currently the Museum of Traditional Fishing. It was built in the 19th century to point out the Estrecho de Bocaina, which divides Fuerteventura from Lanzarote and nowadays it is still active.
Beaches in the southern El Cotillo
Before reaching the beaches in the south, it is recommended to visit Castillo del Tostón, an emblematic building of the town, which dates from the 15th century and was built to defend the island from pirate attacks. Nowadays it is an exhibition centre.
Leaving behind the castle and following the coast towards the south, Piedras Blancas – also known as El Aljibe de la Cueva – is a beach of more than a kilometre long and with a swell that makes it one of the favourite beaches for surfers and kite-surfers. To enjoy this virgin beach of golden sand and rock, it is necessary to travel an unpaved road. It can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car.
To the south, Playa del Águila is a virgin beach in which the nudism is allowed, and it does not have any type of services, a reason why it will be necessary that you take some snacks and drinks if you wish to spend the day there. It is a beach that has some difficulty to access, since you have to go down some stairs because it is at the end of a cliff – this is why it is also known as Playa de las Escaleras. It is a windy beach of high waves – with the arrival of the high tide, the beach almost disappears. It’s a beach for the more adventurous travellers.
